Dictionary.com lists no synonyms for sledgehammer.
The word sledgehammer is derived from the Anglo Saxon “Slaegan”, which, in its first sense, means “to strike violently”. The English words “slag”, “slay”, and “slog” are cognate.–Wikipedia
