day of rest

St.Paul’s Episcopal, Built in 1886, the only active church of Southwark Parish that dates to 1647.

I’ve been asked why take pictures of churches. many reasons. one of them, in America we tear down most buildings once they are middle aged because? Because we build poorly, because we are short-sighted idiots… supply me more reasons! Being that the church is God’s house, we exercise care, not wishing to anger God, a higher percentage of these structures survive.

I stumbled off the track to success in 1968, started chasing shadows that summer. Since then, In addition to farm-laborer and newspaper photographer my occupational incarnations include dishwasher, janitor, retail photo clerk, plumber, HVAC repairman, auto mechanic, CAT scan technologist, computer worker and politico (whatever it takes to buy a camera.) I am on the road to understanding black and white photography.

  1. Walking through Kalgoorlie this past weekend, I pointed out the dates of the buildings on the facade to my girlfriend, ranging from 1897 or so to maybe 1920’s. Being from Southeast Asia, she was commented that on the fact the buildings were maintained and still in use, not like in her country. 130 year old buildings seemed astounding to her. It made me chuckle, remembering my father taking photos in the 90’s of buildings dating back to the 13th century in Celle where he lives in Germany. For example (not my nor my father’s photo): [https://live.staticflickr.com/3199/3005582936_0408014f65_b.jpg[/img].
