{"id":5439,"date":"2014-01-18T12:51:10","date_gmt":"2014-01-18T16:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/?p=5439"},"modified":"2014-01-20T13:34:50","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T17:34:50","slug":"main-street-indeed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/main-street-indeed\/","title":{"rendered":"Main Street Indeed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013361-vortex-barracks-road.jpg\" alt=\"SARC walkers\"><br \/>\nMonday January 13 UVA School of Architecture students and faculty walk where angels fear to tread,<br \/>\na five mile trek north from the Ivy Road &#8220;Seminole Trail&#8221; intersection to the Rivanna River.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013384-vortex-zan-road.jpg\" alt=\"intersection Zan and Trail\"><br \/>\nThe pedestrian infrastructure along Route 29 is 99.9% installed.<br \/>\nWhere then are the pedestrians?<br \/>\nDuring the two hour walk the folk from UVA encountered a handful of indigenous bipeds.<br \/>\nThe majority were runners wrapped in spandex, plugged into hydration equipment.<br \/>\nSeveral were seated at CAT bus-stops, visual and aural hooked to cell phones and iPods.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013390-vortex-channel-29.jpg\" alt=\"TV Journalist\"><br \/>\nThe event was covered by the Daily Progress and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbc29.com\/story\/24438596\/uva-architecture-students-re-imagine-rt-29-corridor-during-vortex-project\">Channel 29<\/a>, from automobiles.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013386-vortex-seminole-peds.jpg\" alt=\"under the Fashion Square Oaks\"><br \/>\nThe throng makes its way north at 2.5 mph. While US 29 might appear visually interesting at 45 mph, at walking speed its lack of amenities is notable, there is nothing to see or do other than preserve one&#8217;s physical safety.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013405-meatza-pizza-vortex.jpg\" alt=\"meatza pizza\"><br \/>\nThe strip is a visual wasteland.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013411-woodbrook-vortex.jpg\" alt=\"Woodbrooke\"><br \/>\nOne constant along the way were the looks of disbelief that the group of pedestrians received from the rubber tire populace.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013416-stellar-one-rt-29.jpg\" alt=\"Stellar what\"><br \/>\nEven the newest development along &#8220;Main Street&#8221; offers slight comfort to bipeds.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/A013409-kohr-brothers.jpg\" alt=\"fuel\"><br \/>\nThis store featured an inviting, human scale facade.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/billemory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/uva-announcement.jpg\" alt=\"uva-announcement\"><br \/>\nSunday, January 19, students will present their proposals at the Carver Rec Center, 605 E.
