Accipiter striatus?

 hawk on the doorstep
What bird is this? The hawk on the doorstep. He/she comes through on occasion and puts talons to a pigeon. Could it be a Cooper’s hawk? Accipiter cooperii?

I stumbled off the track to success in 1968, started chasing shadows that summer. Since then, In addition to farm-laborer and newspaper photographer my occupational incarnations include dishwasher, janitor, retail photo clerk, plumber, HVAC repairman, auto mechanic, CAT scan technologist, computer worker and politico (whatever it takes to buy a camera.) I am on the road to understanding black and white photography.

  1. Being color-blind, I’m not sure, but size is a big determiner b/w a red-tailed and a red-shouldered hawk– the former weighs twice as much (around 1000 gm.). Also acc. to Merlin the red-shouldered has more “rufous” color on breast and shoulder.

Also, if you have not gotten the Merlin app from Cornell, its sound-ID feature is amazing. Walk down the street and id who is singing/calling around you whether you can see the birds in the foliage or not.
