Accipiter striatus?
What bird is this? The hawk on the doorstep. He/she comes through on occasion and puts talons to a pigeon. Could it be a Cooper’s hawk? Accipiter cooperii?

Being color-blind, I’m not sure, but size is a big determiner b/w a red-tailed and a red-shouldered hawk– the former weighs twice as much (around 1000 gm.). Also acc. to Merlin the red-shouldered has more “rufous” color on breast and shoulder.
Also, if you have not gotten the Merlin app from Cornell, its sound-ID feature is amazing. Walk down the street and id who is singing/calling around you whether you can see the birds in the foliage or not.
