Dave Beckerman (1951-2021)

Dave Beckerman died yesterday. He was a thoughtful and gentle man. In addition, he was wicked smart, funny, among the best in whatever field he turned his energies toward. He was generous with his time, generous with other people, empathetic, open and kind. He was a talented writer and an excellent photographer. He loved the pulse of the City. I tried (and failed) for two decades to get Dave to visit Virginia. A missed chance for me. Dave’s bravery, humor, and mentation in the vise of physical calamity were inspirational, his was a difficult exit but he stayed observant and engaged. His departure is a great loss.

Since then, In addition to farm-laborer and newspaper photographer my occupational incarnations include dishwasher, janitor, retail photo clerk, plumber, HVAC repairman, auto mechanic, CAT scan technologist, computer worker and politico (whatever it takes to buy a camera.) I am on the road to understanding black and white photography.
