tall

WTVR tower
In 1953, WTVR activated its tall tower, located adjacent to its West Broad studios. The 843-foot tower is considered part of the Richmond skyline, and can be seen for several miles around Richmond. WTVR used a graphical version of the tower in its news opens for several years in the 1980s and early 1990s.–Wikipedia

Tallest structure in my world, growing up. One of three broadcast TV stations I could find on the 1960’s machine.

I stumbled off the track to success in 1968, started chasing shadows that summer. Since then, In addition to farm-laborer and newspaper photographer my occupational incarnations include dishwasher, janitor, retail photo clerk, plumber, HVAC repairman, auto mechanic, CAT scan technologist, computer worker and politico (whatever it takes to buy a camera.) I am on the road to understanding black and white photography.

  1. In the photograph, the tower literally disappears into the sky. 843 feet? I get a catch in my chest just thinking about it.

  2. There’s a very sturdy ladder running up one corner of this structure. How do I know this? In August of 1980, my best friend Marty Hyers and I were summoned down from the halfway point by six to eight Richmond Police cruisers and one very large spotlight. After getting a free tour of “The South’s Oldest Television Station,” we received our trespassing charges. Thankfully, in hearing the case a few weeks later, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Arlin F. Ruby decided– given our earnest demeanor, our otherwise spotless record, and perhaps the vagueness of the sign warning away “meddlers”– to dismiss the charges pending good behavior.
