Wishful thinking. Stems, rods, roots and branches!
Isaiah and those other prophets were good with poetic rhetoric. It’s a job requirement.
I believe this prophecy was used by the early Christians to legitimize the Messiah, but maybe not. Wasn’t Jesus of Abraham’s branch and not Jesse’s? Obviously I am not a scholar.
