Coragyps atratus duo

I find vultures in their contemplative mode particularly companionable. Hanging out with vultures is not threatening like being sized up by a large alligator. Sure, vultures are carrion birds, but until you are carrion, they are good company. They are quiet. They stretch their wings. They are expert at finding the best seats in the house.

I stumbled off the track to success in 1968, started chasing shadows that summer. Since then, In addition to farm-laborer and newspaper photographer my occupational incarnations include dishwasher, janitor, retail photo clerk, plumber, HVAC repairman, auto mechanic, CAT scan technologist, computer worker and politico (whatever it takes to buy a camera.) I am on the road to understanding black and white photography.

  1. yes this is all true, but to pop the balloon on your poetic waxing, if you’ve ever seen 100 of them roost in a tree in someone’s yard and defy all attempts to get them to move, such that a person nearly cut down the tree…you might add a caveat to your caption! that being said, seeing a TV (turkey vulture) soaring above the earth, able to sniff a few molecules from decaying carcass, is beautiful!

    1. Why does a wake of buzzards generate revulsion in humans? Do buzzards feel the same way about a large group of people? I suspect they are more tolerant than we are.
