Madison County

three horse barn tree
In the country, the urban services, garbage pickup, police, libraries, parks, schools, sidewalks, grocers, professional offices, jobs. They all are at a distance. There is a horse, a barn, a tree. Wildness sometimes, an ordering of the chaos at others. Always beauty. The beauty of creation. There was a song by Canned Heat.

I stumbled off the track to success in 1968, started chasing shadows that summer. Since then, In addition to farm-laborer and newspaper photographer my occupational incarnations include dishwasher, janitor, retail photo clerk, plumber, HVAC repairman, auto mechanic, CAT scan technologist, computer worker and politico (whatever it takes to buy a camera.) I am on the road to understanding black and white photography.

  1. The irony for me now thinking about Canned Heat’s “Going Up the Country” is that I associate it with Woodstock, with its thousands of people in close proximity! thanks for the memory and the music.

    1. The song does have a strong association with Woodstock for many. For me, it was the Voice advocating isolation (the move to the chestnut cabin in the woods on the hill above Foster Branch). Doing what Canned Heat instructed cemented bad tendencies. But the water did taste like wine.
