I stumbled off the track to success in 1968, started chasing shadows that summer. Since then, In addition to farm-laborer and newspaper photographer my occupational incarnations include dishwasher, janitor, retail photo clerk, plumber, HVAC repairman, auto mechanic, CAT scan technologist, computer worker and politico (whatever it takes to buy a camera.) I am on the road to understanding black and white photography.

I’d written the City about this tree. Its root zone had been buried by the City’s plumbing subcontractor. Additionally,
the ground around it received a generous layer of gravel which was subsequently compacted. I was hoping my letter would
result in remediation, careful removal of the suffocating layers of dirt and gravel back to original grade,
some air spade work to loosen up the compaction.
    That’s not what happened.
